Forbidden City

Courtyards, roofs, and a long walk from the Meridian Gate. It is worth the booking fuss, and it is not a place you can decide to enter at the door.

Go early in your slot. The halls are large and the middle of the day is a slow river of people. Jingshan, the hill just north, is the view back across the roofs if you still have legs.

The visit is a walk, not a set of rooms you duck into for ten minutes. Wear shoes you trust. Water inside is bottled, not from the tap.
