The public bus is cheap and a little fiddly the first time. A booked car is reasonable for a group. Leave Beijing early enough that a traffic jam does not eat the morning.
Wilder sections such as Jinshanling are better with a guide and proper shoes. Mutianyu is the one that works as a first Wall.
