Guilin

Guilin is the city on the rail line. Yangshuo is the town among the hills. Most visitors should sleep in Yangshuo and treat Guilin as the station, the noodles, and a river evening.

Watch for

Low water and a shortened cruise

Trains reach Guilin easily from Guangzhou. Yangshuo’s high-speed station is outside the town. Budget the taxi. West Street is loud. Sleep a few lanes back so the night market is a walk and not your bedroom.

The classic cruise depends on the water. In the dry months the advertised route is sometimes shortened. Ask which pier you depart from and where you get off. A bicycle day on the Yulong River paths often shows more than the loudspeaker tour.

Scooters are a common injury. If you do not ride at home, take the bus or a bike. Summer is hot, wet, and sudden.
