Luoyang Museum

Free, often, and still reserved. The collection explains the grottoes and the peonies better than either site will. Book it as its own morning.

Museum. The building is modern. The objects are why the tag is not historic-monument.

Go before Longmen if you like context, or after if you like to look first and read second.

Getting there

In the city, a metro or taxi. Not at the grottoes. Check the address on the reservation so you are at the museum and not a smaller gallery.

A central hotel makes this the easy morning. Then you can still be hungry for a normal lunch.
