Nanjing City Wall

Zhonghua Gate is the usual first section: a fortress of tunnels and a stretch of brick you can walk. Other gates open other pieces. It is not Xi’an’s continuous bike ring.

The scale is the sight. Nanjing’s wall enclosed a capital, and what you can walk today is a fraction of what was built.

Evening on an open section is cooler. Midday on the brick is a skillet.

Getting there

Zhonghua Gate has its own metro station. Other open sections, such as the stretch near Xuanwu Lake, are different rides. Pick one for the day unless you enjoy wall logistics.

Staying nearby

Xinjiekou or Fuzimiao keeps at least one gate nearby. Do not choose a hotel because it claims a wall view unless you have checked that the section below the window is actually open.
