Humble Administrator’s Garden

Ponds, covered walks, and the garden people mean when they say Suzhou. It rewards a slow morning. It punishes a plan to see three more afterwards.

The garden is a sequence of courtyards and water, not a park to picnic in. An hour and a half is honest. Two hours if you sit.

It is a historic garden. The canals outside are the cultural landscape. They are a different page.

Getting there

Central Suzhou, a metro ride and a short walk from the station. Go at opening. The tour groups arrive in a wave.

Sleep in the center so the morning is easy. The streets outside the gate are tour restaurants. Eat noodles elsewhere.
