Zhangjiajie

The pillars are the national forest park. Tianmen Mountain is a different ticket in the city. The glass bridge is a third place. People lose a day by treating them as one gate. Hike the park if you came to walk. Ride Tianmen if you came for the hole in the mountain.

Watch for

Fog. It edits the pillars without asking.

Stay in Wulingyuan to be at a park gate early. The national forest park includes Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, and Golden Whip Stream, but the internal buses and the Bailong Elevator are how people try to see all of it too fast. Pick a trail. Tianmen Mountain is back toward Zhangjiajie city, a separate day. The Grand Canyon glass bridge is again separate.

The airport and the high-speed station are in Zhangjiajie city, not in the park. Budget the ride to Wulingyuan, about an hour. Fog and rain close views and sometimes cars. Keep one indoor or stream day.

The food is mountain-town food: smoked pork, sour fish, and a lot of chili. Eat in Wulingyuan. The park restaurants are for not fainting.

Getting around

How you actually move.

Bus or taxi from Zhangjiajie station or the airport to Wulingyuan. Inside the national park, use the official buses between gates. Walking Golden Whip and riding up to the pillars is a sane split. Doing every named photo in one ticket is not.

Tianmen’s cable car starts in Zhangjiajie city. If you sleep in Wulingyuan, that day includes the ride back to town. The Grand Canyon is outside both centers. Read the address the night before.

Where to sleep

A neighborhood, not a booking ad.

Wulingyuan village, near the park gate you will use, is the right base for two park days. It is touristy and practical.

A hotel in Zhangjiajie city suits Tianmen and the station, and makes every park morning a commute. Split nights only if you hate packing less than you hate the dawn ride. Do not sleep at the airport.

Eat this, not a poster of it

What Zhangjiajie actually tastes like

腊肉

Smoked pork

Tujia-style cured pork, steamed or stir-fried with dried chili. Salty, smoky, and better with rice than as a novelty skewer.

酸菜鱼

Sour fish

Fish in pickled mustard greens. A useful milder order if the chili oil has already won the day.

菌子

Wild mushrooms, in season

Only in a busy restaurant, only in season, never from a basket offered on a trail. The interesting ones and the dangerous ones look related.
