Pingyao

The wall is intact and the streets inside are a preserved county town that also sells a great many souvenirs. The ticket is the wall and a set of courtyards. Read the list so you do not buy the same courtyard twice. A night inside, before the coaches, is the point of stopping the train.

Book first

The ancient-city ticket, in peak season

Watch for

A golf-cart tour that skips the lanes

Enter, walk the wall in the late light, and see Rishengchang and the yamen if they are on your ticket. Shuanglin’s murals are outside the walls and worth the ride. The Wang Family Compound is a day trip toward Lingshi, not a courtyard on the main street.

Pingyao station, the older one, is the useful stop, a ride from the gate. Pingyao Ancient City station is a high-speed stop farther out. Read the name. From Beijing or Xi’an it is a reasonable train, not a flight.

Beef is the local product, sliced thin. Oat noodles and a bowl of something wheat are the meal. The banquet in a courtyard with a show is optional.

Getting around

How you actually move.

Taxi or battery car from the station to a named gate. Inside the walls, walk. The electric carts are for luggage and tired people, and they flatten the town into a tour.

Shuanglin is a short ride outside. The Wang compound is about an hour and a half. Hire the car for that day and keep the town days on foot.

Where to sleep

A neighborhood, not a booking ad.

A courtyard guesthouse inside the walls, on a side lane. The south-north main street is noise and shops. The morning before the gates fill is why you slept here.

Outside the walls is cheaper and misses the point. Use it only if everything inside is full. Heating in winter is the question to ask before you admire the kang in the photograph.

What Pingyao actually tastes like

平遥牛肉

Pingyao beef

Cured beef, sliced. Salty, firm, and a snack or a cold plate. Buy a little from a shop that will let you taste, not a vacuum brick at the first gate.

莜面

Oat noodles

Steamed oat-flour pieces, dipped. A local texture. Wheat intolerance is not the same as oat, but the kitchens are not allergen labs.

碗托

Wantuo

A buckwheat jelly, usually dressed with vinegar and chili. Street food. Mild unless they add the oil.
