Harbin

Harbin is a northern capital of brick, bread, and a river that freezes. From late December into February the ice festival is a separate, enormous ticket. The rest of the year you still have the cathedral, the street, and a museum that is not entertainment. Dress for the month you actually booked.

Ice and Snow World, and only in winter

Watch for

A coat you bought in Shanghai

Central Street and Saint Sophia fill a day in any month. Sun Island is the river park, pleasant in summer and a snow venue in winter. The ice festival is a night of its own and sells out. The Unit 731 museum is a sober historic site. Do not schedule it as a colorful stop between snacks.

The airport is a ride. Harbin Station and Harbin West both exist. Winter pavements are ice. Shoes with a grip are not a fashion note.

Dumplings, smoked meat, and heavy bread are the cold-weather kitchen. Guobaorou, the sweet-sour crispy pork, is the Dongbei plate with a page.

Getting around

How you actually move.

Metro and walking in the center. Central Street to Saint Sophia is a short cold walk. Sun Island is across the Songhua, a bridge or a taxi, and in winter the river itself may be a path locals use and visitors should not invent.

Ice and Snow World is on the river side and needs a taxi or a special bus in the evening. Leave time for the queue and the cold between the car and the gate.

Where to sleep

A neighborhood, not a booking ad.

Central Street is the base. You can walk to the cathedral and eat without a plan. A room off the pedestrian street sleeps better than one above the bakery queue.

In deep winter, the hotel’s heating matters more than the view. Check that, and check that the walk to the metro is possible on ice.

What Harbin actually tastes like

红肠

Red sausage

A smoked Harbin sausage with a Russian lineage. Snack, not the whole lunch. Eat it with bread and the weather.
