黄山 · 3 days

Huangshan

The mountain is a hike, with cable cars that shorten it and do not cancel it. Hongcun and Xidi are the village days. Tunxi is where the train arrives and where you sleep if you are not on the summit. The summit is colder than the town by enough to matter.

Loading the forecast…

This is the city forecast, in Celsius. A mountain, gorge, or dune an hour away can be a different day. Data comes from Open-Meteo and is refreshed on this site.

Stay near

Tunxi, or Tangkou the night before the climb

Give it

One night on the mountain, or a very long day

Book first

The mountain, and a summit bed if you want sunrise

Watch for

Ice, fog, and a cable car that stops

Decide the gate. The south side, Yuping cableway from the Tangkou side, and the east side, Cloud Valley, are different approaches. A one-day dash up and down is possible and thin. A night in a summit hotel is how you see dawn, and those beds sell out.

Tunxi, also called Huangshan City, has the airport, the rail station, and the old street. Tangkou is the south-gate base, closer to the mountain and duller at dinner. Hongcun is a day from either.

The mountain food is noodles and a lot of bamboo shoots, priced for a captive cliff. Eat properly in Tunxi. Hui cuisine is less fiery than Hunan and proud of ham, tofu, and stews.

Getting around

How you actually move.

Train or plane to Tunxi, then a bus or taxi to Tangkou or the east gate. The ride is an hour-ish and the last buses matter. On the mountain, you walk. Cable cars close for wind. That is a hike you did not schedule, so keep a margin.

Hongcun and Xidi are west of Tunxi, a bus or a booked car. They combine with each other better than with a summit day.

Where to sleep

A neighborhood, not a booking ad.

Tunxi for the arrival night and the old street. Tangkou the night before an early cable car. A summit hotel if sunrise is the point, booked with the ticket plan, not after you arrive at the top.

Summit rooms are plain, expensive, and the only way to be there at dawn without a headlamp start. Bring a layer the town did not need.

Eat this, not a poster of it

What Huangshan actually tastes like

徽菜

Hui-style stew

Ham, bamboo, and tofu in a stone pot more often than a chili pile. Ask what the ham is. It is salty on purpose.

毛豆腐

Hairy tofu

Fermented tofu, fried. It smells stronger than it tastes. A fair regional dare, and easy to skip.

竹笋

Bamboo shoots

In season, the mountain vegetable. Fresh, not the brown canned kind. Good with the stew.
