Public hospitals are the inexpensive door, and a booked appointment is what makes them fast. Dentistry is where the gap with a rich country is the widest. The English-speaking private clinic is the convenient door, and it costs more.
How a visit actually works
Bring the passport. Registration is real-name, and the name on the booking has to match the passport. Pay with WeChat or Alipay, or at the window, and keep the invoice (发票). An insurer at home usually wants that paper.
Book on the hospital’s own WeChat mini program, or on the city’s health platform. In Beijing that platform is the 114 service. An ordinary clinic often has a chair within a few days. A famous specialist is slower. A friend who reads Chinese, or a translation app with the medical words already downloaded, is the difference between a short visit and a lost morning.
Ambulance is 120. Chest pain, a bad fever, a swollen face, or a tooth knocked out belongs in the emergency department the same day. A booking for next week is the wrong tool.
Teeth, including the expensive work
A root canal is the endodontics department, 牙体牙髓科. A crown is prosthodontics, 修复科. Book the department. “Dentist” is not one queue.
At a public stomatology hospital, that work is routinely far below a private fee in the United States, Britain, or Australia. The treatment plan on the day is the price. This page does not print a yuan figure. The tooth, the number of canals, and the ceramic all change it, and a number copied from a forum is how people budget the wrong visit.
The public specialist hospital. Booking is the hospital’s WeChat mini program, 北京大学口腔医院医疗服务助手. Outpatient desks list a passport among the documents they accept for real-name registration. Peking University’s health-science site is the parent institution.
The same hospital runs an international clinic, with English and a higher fee, aimed at people who want a shorter queue and a language they speak. The clinic has published 010-83013555 as its appointment line. Use the public chairs when the point of the trip is the public fee.
The public specialist hospital for the southwest, attached to Sichuan University. Same pattern: passport, a department, a plan before a crown. Chengdu is the city page.
The stomatology hospital people mean in Shanghai, attached to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Book through the hospital’s own channel or the Shanghai health platform, and confirm which campus. The university site is the parent that answered; the hospital’s own domain is easy to confuse with a copy.
Bybo (拜博) and Arrail (瑞尔) are the private chains that can put you in a chair sooner than a famous public hospital. The bill usually still sits well under a private bill at home, and above the public hospital. Ask for the plan in writing before anyone prepares a crown.
United Family (和睦家) is the English-speaking hospital group, in several cities, and some international insurers pay it directly. It is the convenient door. It is the expensive one.
A tertiary public hospital, a 三甲, handles the sudden illness: a fever, a sprain, a child’s rash, stitches. Ask the hotel which one is nearest, and whether it has an international department. The international department is English and a higher fee. The ordinary outpatient hall is the public price and a Chinese queue.
A pharmacy (药店) sells a lot of ordinary medicine a clinic would hand you at home. The pharmacist is not a diagnosis. Antibiotics for a child are a doctor’s visit. In Guangzhou the same public-hospital pattern applies: a university stomatology hospital for teeth, a 三甲 for the rest.
